Every woman knows that a great outfit is only as good as the pair of shoes she’s wearing with it. Every businessman knows that their business is only as good as the CEO signing their paychecks. That’s why if you’re the man at the top you want to do everything in your power to be a great CEO.
What does it take to be a great CEO? It’s a question that not many CEOs take the time to ask, which could be precisely the reason that so many businesses these days are failing. Men and women who have no idea what’s going to be required of them are being thrust into positions where the decisions they make affect hundreds of people every day of the week, and the events that follow can be devastating.
A great CEO is not born, no matter what anyone says. A young man who learned the business at his father’s knee and steps into the top spot at the age of 22 wasn’t genetically predisposed to becoming a great CEO, he learned how to do it from the day he was born and he learned from the best. Becoming a great CEO is a learning process, and the secret to being a great CEO is being willing to admit that you have a great deal to learn.
When you’ve admitted that you’ve only just stepped out on the path to knowledge that leads to that top spot you’ve already won half of the battle. The other half is actually learning what you need to know to be a great CEO, and that’s a lifelong process. For the rest of your career you’re going to spend as much time as you can eak out of your day studying the moves of the people who came before you, attending conferences and charity dinners where you’ll listen to half hearted speeches over cold, rubbery chicken and absorb the lessons being taught like a sponge.
Of course, once you’ve taken time to learn what it takes to be a great CEO you’re going to have to take that knowledge and put it into action in the boardroom. That’s where the turbulence starts. When you start doing your research you’re going to find a lot of things that are going to take you by surprise, facts that are going to be a slap in the face of many of the illusions you’ve always been taught.
Because the secrets to real success are never what people really think they are, you’re probably going to be discreetly (and not so discreetly) ridiculed when you go to put thought to action. Don’t let that stop you, and don’t give up. That, and a steadfast determination to do what’s right for your business, are really the only secrets to being a great CEO.
For more information on learning how to become a great CEO, take a few moments and touch base with any of the numerous CEO coaches and mentors out there. There are literally hundreds of men and women who have been big names in the business world since you were in diapers and who are anxiously waiting to share with you the secrets to their success.
