From Mark Grisham: I feel fortunate that I ran into my co author, David Donaldson, after not seeing him for almost twenty years. We bumped into each other at a local restaurant several years back and renewed a close friendship. We had gone our separate ways after high school and college. David had become a sincere man of God with more ethics than I could of ever had.
He had started a Christian counseling ministry to help distressed people cope with today’s often harsh world. His faith based charity offers free counseling to any area pastor and his family as well consultation fees based on the individual’s income, which is usually not very much. A lot of his clients have nowhere else to turn as most have exhausted their insurance (if they had any) and drained family members seeking help for their particular disorder. If this was not enough to keep him busy, he took over the operations of a local home for abused girls and saved several children from being tossed back into an abusive foster care system. He then opened an emergency shelter for boys and girls, who are routinely turned over to the local Department of Human Services, who in turn sends them to David’s emergency shelter.
These kids are usually on their last stop before foster care. Most of the time, they have no family member willing to provide a place for them to live. These poor kids have been chewed up and spit by our society through no fault of their own. They are just innocent children who happened to be born into an abusive or neglectful situation. I cannot think of a more deserving charity than one that will help save innocent children.
David and his wife Cindy, who grew up in foster care herself, have a unique gentleness that these children instantly respond to. Under their watchful eyes, these kids are exposed to God and a safe loving environment for the first time in their young lives. The response from the kids is almost instant as they feel safe and in the presence of God’s people. Through intense counseling and a loving environment, these kids are taught that what happened to them is not who they are, but just a bad memory.
The success rate at turning these kids lives around and making productive human beings out of them, is amazing. With an excellent and devoted staff, David and Cindy have rescued hundreds of kids from potentially harmful situations. However, as I mentioned before, this all takes place because of charitable individuals who give their time and money. Because of the sluggish economy though, most charitable organizations are suffering because of substantial decrease in contributions.
Unfortunately, if this trend was to continue, many shelters and homes for abused children will be forced to close their doors. If this happens, thousands of kids across this country will be sent back into the foster care system. The next time you feel the need give in your heart, please consider David and his ministries.
