Ask any mother or father and they will tell you that the most important thing in the world to them is their children. Having said that, it is not uncommon for many parents to feel at a loss as to what the best parenting techniques are to raise a well behaved toddler. There really isn t any guide or course that most people take before having a child and this can make it difficult to know what you should and shouldn t do when raising your own children. Some parents seem at a loss and are unable to say no or discipline their child in anyway, the end result is they raise a child that behaves badly and their parents are powerless to control him or her and seem completely unable to do anything about it. Here are three tips that anyone can use to help put any troublesome toddler on the right track to becoming well behaved and good mannered in no time.

The first thing you need to always keep in mind when raising a child is that you need to be a good role model. Practice what you preach. Your child will use you as a benchmark to what is and isn t acceptable behaviour. If your child sees you doing one thing and saying another, they ll quickly use this in their defense and ask why. Children learn how to interact, behave and in general function as people in life based primarily from what they see and hear their parents doing. Their parents are basically their guidebook on how you should behave and act. This isn t to say that your child will grow up and behave exactly as you do, but how you behave does have a big impact on them and you need to set a good example right from the start. The best advice anyone can give here is that you should always follow your own rules or any rules you make your child live by.

The second thing is that if you set rules make sure they are enforced. Setting rules and actually enforcing them are two completely different things. We all have good intentions but some people are unable to follow through when it comes to crunch time and making their child follow rules. Make it clear that if this rule is broken there are consequences and what those consequences are. It may take some time but your child will quickly learn which kind of behavior is permitted and which kind isn t. A solid set of rules makes it easy for them to learn what is accepted and what isn t.

The final tip for good parenting techniques is to make sure you are consistent. It is all too easy to say one thing and threaten to punish your child but never actually carry it out. After a while your child will learn that your threats carry no weight and they are free to break any rule you set without fear of facing consequences. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. Make sure all forms of punishment are carried out or your child will begin to think breaking rules has no consequences.
