If you are considering breast implants, you are no doubt taking many factors into account: the cost of surgery, any potential complications, and how they will look: both after the surgery and down the road.
One of the decisions you will need to make is whether you prefer silicone or saline breast implants. As you know, these are the two most commonly used materials for implants today.

Implant Choice And Breast Surgery

Both saline and breast implants have been in use for decades, with each one coming into and falling out of favor repeatedly with women and doctors through the years.

Today, great advances have been made in both technologies. Both are considered safe, top notch choices. Each one has its advantages for women, both during surgery and afterward.

Interestingly, both silicone and saline breast implants are made of silicone shells (like bags). Silicone implants are filled with a saline gel, while saline implants are filled with a salt and water solution.
Breast Implants: Silicone or Saline?

So, what do you prefer: silicone or saline breast implants? Here are 5 questions to ask yourself that can help you decide which option is right for you:

Question #1: How important is to you that your implants feel natural?

Both saline and silicone implants can look very realistic from the outside, whether the woman is naked or clothed. Still, most people report that to the touch, silicone implants feel more realistic. This is because the gel more closely resembles human fat, which is the natural filler for women s breasts.

Question #2: How important is it that you have a small incision?

If you prefer a smaller incision, saline may be the way to go. During surgery, these implants are inserted through small incisions as empty shells. They are only filled with solution after they are implanted in the body. Meanwhile, silicone implants require larger incisions to insert.
Question #3: If there should be a rupture, how important is it that your implants contain an absorbable substance?

Both types of implants are likely to rupture at some point in the future: this is entirely normal and expected (after 10 15 years, in most cases). When saline implants rupture, the solution is absorbed into the body. However, with silicone, while not dangerous in itself, it just pools inside the body, usually contained within the natural capsule that is formed. The silicone must be removed by re surgery. But, in either case, after a rupture re surgery is required to fix the way the breasts look.

Question #4: Is cost a major factor?
As a general rule, saline implants are cheaper than are silicone implants.

Question #5: Do you want the possibility of altering the size of your implants later?

Nobody knows exactly how your implants will look after surgery. You may want them to be increased or decreased in size. With silicone implants, you are basically stuck with the size you get during surgery. However, if you elect for saline implants, most models are equipped with special valves that allow doctors to add or remove saline solution to adjust the size.
