James Burns is one of the premier manufacturers of binding equipment, including standalone devices such as punches and wire/comb closers. One of their wire closers is the Lhermite EB3500. Here are this product s strengths and weaknesses.

Strengths:

* The EB3500 can be used for documents of many different sizes. It s more than capable of handling items that are up to 14 inches long, so you ll be able to bind documents that are legal sized (8.5 x 14 ) and smaller.

* This is one of the few wire closers on the market that s compatible with just about every wire spine available. The EB3500 will close both 2:1 and 3:1 pitch spines with diameters ranging from 3/16 to 1 1/4. This feature makes this device very versatile and will save you money because you won t need to buy two different closers. Plus, you ll be able to bind documents containing up to 250 pages.

* This machine is nicely designed and you ll find that you don t need to strain to use it. It s very ergonomically friendly thanks to its angled document feeder as well as the rest bars that your document will be placed on. The design of this device makes it really easy to use and best of all, you won t get worn out when working with it.

* This is one opener that s very easy to operate. Once you place your wire spine on the opener, you just need to turn a knob to open it up. You can then insert your pages and close the spine. That s all there is to it.

* There are a couple of accessories you can purchase for the EB3500. One is a stand so you can maximize your workspace. The other is an attachment that will allow you to turn your documents into calendars that can hang on a wall.

* This is device is operated by a foot pedal. Since your hands will be free, you ll find that your work gets done much sooner.

Weaknesses:

* The EB3500 is a pretty large device that will take up a fair amount of room in your work environment. It measures 19 1/4 (width) x 19 3/4 (depth) x 10 (height) so be prepared to make some room for it.

* This device isn t compatible with plastic combs. If you wish to work with combs, you ll need a different (or additional) machine.

* Obviously, if you wish to bind with the EB3500, you either going to need a paper punch or, at least, prepunched paper. The punch will cost you additional money if you don t already have one in your office.

Overall, the James Burns Lhermite EB3500 would be a good choice if you re in need of a wire closer. It s easy to use, won t wreak havoc on your joints, and it s compatible with just about every wire spine that s available. Of course, you will need a way of getting your paper punched (if you don t have one already), but all in all, this is a pretty impressive machine. Be sure to take a look at it if your office is interested in wire binding.
