In the early 15th century in England, a new game named shuffleboard came into existence. This game can be played without using any special equipment. In the past there were games which were played with groat, a type of heavy coin. During this time, the game was known as shove groat because you literally shoved a groat. To make a goal, you had to get your groat as close to the end of the board as possible without it falling off.

As things changed in terms of money and other factors, the game also changed and became more like the shuffle board we know today.

Using shuffle board tables effectively requires great skill and was clearly the case in the late 19th century when the game became famous in the United States. Around this time, New York began organizing tournaments and some great players received a lot of attention as a result. Shuffleboards heyday was in probably in the 1940 s and 1950 s as more cities started arranging tournaments and started being played more at home by regular people, too.

While you can tell from the smaller selection of shuffleboard tables available today that the game is no longer at its popularity peak, there are still quite enough to choose from that you can find one for your home. With the right table, you ll have yourself an excellent indoor game. You can even practice for tournaments or matches that are held in game halls, bars, and community centers all across the country.

Of course, you first need to pick the perfect table. You need to determine its quality by moving weights across the surface. High quality tables allow the weights to move easily across the surface while the opposite is true for the lower quality models.

Always consider the size of your room when choosing the right shuffleboard table. You ll find standard tables in sizes from 9 to 16 feet. You can find longer ones as well which range from 18 to 22 feet in length. Keep in mind that these measurements are for the entire length of the table and not just the playing surface which makes up a smaller percentage. Unlike some games which require a lot of space around the table to play correctly, you can do well even if you have only a 2 to 3 foot open area around the shuffle board table.

Additionally, you ll need to consider the thickness of the playing surface, which is called the board. This thickness can range from 1 ˝ inches to 3 inches. If you plan on using the tables a lot or you want to use them as practice for a tournament, thicker is going to be the better option. Regardless of the thickness of the board, you must always keep the surface polished to reduce friction.

If you plan on keeping your shuffleboard table outdoors, keep an eye out for warping or buckling which are bad signs for the table and which are usually associated with poor quality. A good idea would be to look for a table designed specifically for outdoor use.

Overall, playing shuffleboard has a rich history. You can be part of that history right in your home. With a little practice and the perfect equipment, you’ll be able to enjoy your shuffleboard table for many years to come.
