People have used rugs as additional decorative pieces in different rooms. Some are designed so that they can be fit bedrooms while others are designed for living rooms. A runner rug is another variation. The sizes this type of rugs has are used in hallways. The overall appeal is very much different from how other rugs are used. Pieces of furniture oftentimes are placed on top of the usual rugs. Those serve as both decorative accent and as floor surface protection. These rugs are too narrow to be used for pieces of furniture. Furthermore, putting something on top of a rug might just become a distraction to the wonderful patterns it has.

Runner rugs are perfect for hallways that appear too empty. It breaks the monotony of the floor pattern and makes the space more welcoming. The rug should complement the items hung on the wall. If the walls have artworks, then the feel or theme should be somewhat close to the patterns the rug has. If the walls have picture frames then the designs should also go well with the rug pattern.

It should not be too hard to find one especially that the selection of designs can be used in numerous home decorating styles. There are ones that are perfect for contemporary spaces. Those would have geometric shapes and vivid colors to bring life to the neutral colored walls. There are also rugs with oriental themes that can also be used with posh decorating styles such as classical and Victorian. It really depends on how dressed up the hallway already is. Most of the time, intricate rugs are used if the hallway looks too gloomy. If the hallway already has a console table or any other piece of furniture with elaborate carving, then the runner can be plainer. If the rug is pattern heavy and the artwork and fixtures are also elaborate, it would look too heavy on the eyes. The key is not to overdo it and homeowners should always aim for balance.

The color theme of the rug can also be based on the paint on the walls or the type of finishing the floor has. Homeowners should keep in mind that they are aiming for a unifying feeling when they add a piece in a particular space. For the hallway, they have to consider the wall treatment, the ceiling, the ceiling light and wall sconces, the artworks on the wall and the doorway to the next room. All of these should be considered to make sure that the rug chosen is something that would blend in.

There are more specific designs for these types of rugs. There are ones with southwestern themes just as there are ones with a rustic appeal. There are also more playful ones that have prints of stone pathways and grass. It really depends on what the homeowner is going to use it for. Because of its shape and its pattern, it can also put emphasis on where it leads to. For example, guests who just came in through the main door are led visually to the living room. Aside from aesthetics, runner rugs also serve as additional cushioning in different parts of the house.
