Coffee drinkers have traditionally been warned about the ill effects of coffee drinking on one s health. For instance, women were advised to avoid coffee as consumption could lead to the development of lumps in the breast, which over time might become cancerous. As a result, some people switched to de caf; others gave up coffee and the rest of us continued to down our daily java as we ignored our guilty feelings.

However, due to many recent research studies, we can now drink without guilt. Medical research in the United States, Canada and Sweden has debunked many theories such as coffee causing breast lumps in women. Not only that, but also many studies has concluded that coffee can actually be beneficial to one s health. For instance, coffee contains substances, which can lower women s risk for estrogen dependent cancer because of the manner in which these substances work upon estrogen levels.

Coffee consumption can also lower the risk of many other debilitating diseases such as Diabetes 2, Parkinson s, Alzheimer s, colon cancer and gallstones. Coffee contains both caffeine and powerful anti oxidants. Some of the benefits of coffee drinking are due to the caffeine while others are the result of the anti oxidants.

Coffee can relieve a headache as a result of the action of the caffeine. Although it is not a well known fact, both Anacin and Excedrin, which are popular over the counter headache remedies, contain caffeine. Each dose of either of these has about 120 mgs. of caffeine whereas an eight ounce mug of java contains only 85mg of caffeine. So two cups of coffee should have the same effect as one dose of Anacin or Excedrin.

Research has also established the value of caffeine in lowering the risk of and treating Parkinson s disease. Due to the evidence compiled from these studies, the pharmaceutical industry is now involved in the development of drugs, which will contain caffeine to treat Parkinson s disease.

The incidence of Diabetes 2 is increasing in the American population and is becoming a major cause of death and disability. Diabetes 2 is caused by the body s inability to dispose of glucose or sugar in the blood. An experiment was done with rats in which the compounds in coffee were given to the rats. The result was those rats which received these compounds demonstrated an increased capacity for their livers to burn sugar. Thus it was concluded that the substances in coffee enhance the ability of the body to eliminate glucose (sugar in the blood).

When compared with all other plant constituents, coffee ranks as having one of the highest concentrations of chlorogenic acids. Roasting the coffee beans transforms these acids into chlorogenic acid lactones, thereby increasing the anti oxidant content. The role of anti oxidants in the human body is to counteract the destructive forces of the free radicals, which contribute to various diseases.

The human body needs these acids and coffee beans are one of the richest sources, and for many people, they are the major source, furnishing as much as 70 of their diet. Coffee beans have the advantage of being available year round when other sources such as various fruits are seasonal.

So now, coffee drinkers can shed their guilt and head for Starbucks. And if you order a latte, you can enjoy the benefits of the coffee bean and with the added milk, create a protein drink.
