A beautiful bathroom inspired by a Moroccan theme can provide a visually stunning and very effective look.

Walls in a subtle yet striking blue tiles with white grouting may sound a little harsh, however add some tall storage units with an pointed arches and lattice work doors all painted in brilliant white and the whole effect starts to come together wonderfully.

Replace pedestal basin with trendy basin which sit neatly on the top of a vanity unit can instantly bring a bathroom up to date. Choose vanity units which have some unusual features such as ornate carving on the edges and rather than enclosed cupboards have open shelving. These are the ideal place to storage and display fluffy towels in white and blue.

A great place to find unusual units are bric a brac shops, flea markets and boot fairs. Their original design intention may not have been for use in a bathroom, however with a couple coats of white paint they can look unique and very striking. Add a couple of rows of white wall tiles to act as a splash back. Taps should be placed high to give a cascade of water into the basin. Mixer taps with an old ‘look’ would be perfect!

The basin unit is the ideal place to display objects of interest, such as antique perfume bottles, antique silver backed brush sets, even photographs in ornate silver frames or interesting soap dispensers.

A large mirror placed above the unit will not only provide a place to reflect your image, but can be effectively used to give the illusion of more space as well as additional natural lighting, particularly in small or dark bathrooms.

Keep the flooring in a Moroccan style by using small mosaics style tiling. This is a very practical way to keep a bathroom clean. A rug can be placed on the floor for stepping onto when getting out of the shower or bath, choose a rug with a rubber style backing which will reduce the risk of slipping.

If you can find some wall scones which compliment the design style, mount these on the wall either side of the mirror to produce wonderful lighting effects at night. Bathrooms are now considered to be sanctuaries, havens for indulging in ’me’ time, places for relaxation and de stressing rather as purely clinically functional. Keep them clutter free otherwise the ambience and effect will be ruined! Store every time, bar your objects of interest, in the storage cupboards, this included toothbrushes!

As such you should make your bathroom as sumptuous and visually calming as you can. Add an old fashioned boudoir style chair. These too can be found a flea markets and junk shops. If they are a bit shabby it is really quite simple to recover the upholstery with new fabric in designs and colours that compliment the bathroom.

If blue is not your choice of colour opt for similar design styles and use soft orange tiles rather then blue. Add accent pieces, towels, rugs and window dressings in the same tones and you will have a winning combination!
