The fact is that more and more people are simply carrying credit cards and debit cards. They are not carrying cash as often as they used to. A business that does not have a credit card terminal is a business missing out on opportunity.
Even checks are not as widely accepted, but it is important for some retail outlets to accept them. In this case, you may need something such as a check printer. You may also need to have a system in place that allows you to cross reference the checking account number and a person’s ID number to make sure they do not have bounced checks out there. There are various check verification companies and you can acquire the right equipment from them for a fee.
So as you can see, it is important for virtually anyone accepting money to have point of sale equipment. The only people who can really get away with it is someone having a yard sale and using a crayon box or security box to keep the money in. No one expects you to have point of sale equipment in this case because you’re simply accepting cash for small transactions. When you’re a store, customers expect there to be point of sale equipment for your protection and for theirs.
