The Library as a Workplace

Working at the library has long since been one of the only places where a person could go in order to complete their work, study for exams or simply curl up with a good book and read. However, over time, the library has slowly transformed itself into being a place that you can go to do your work as someone who works from home or runs a business remotely. For example, at many college libraries, you will notice that they typically have an abundance of rooms that patrons can use to set up meetings or work on group projects. There are also smaller rooms that are built for individuals to work on their own so that they don t disturb others.

Depending on where you live, the only downside to libraries is the fact that many libraries aren t as quiet as they used to be. This can depend on a varying set of factors that include things such as scheduled activities that the library has planned for that day as well as how big the library is. Obviously, a smaller library may be noisier than a larger one (though not always). Additionally, if you are working at a college library, you have the advantage in the fact that college libraries are almost always open later, and in some cases are open twenty four hours in order to accommodate students who may be up late studying for exams. On the other side of this you have regular public libraries which are only open to the public until a certain time of night.

Many public libraries now are offering quiet rooms or rooms in which you can bring your laptop and enjoy the peace and quiet need to concentrate on various projects. However, you should check with your local libraries as many of the older ones still don t offer this as an option. Also, some of the quiet rooms are reserved for non computer working people, citing the fact that the clicking of the mouse and typing on the keyboard distracts other patrons.

Regardless of where you decided to do your work, the library has and will always remain at the top of the list. Additionally, if you need a reference for something that you cannot seem to find on Google, or if you come across a book in your search on Amazon, you are already in a place where you can typically find what you re looking for without having to spend money. Another downside to working at a library is the fact that it can get noisy. This is preventable by simply asking one of the librarians when those busy hours are. They should know this information and be able to advise you accordingly. It used to be that you could go to the library in the middle of the day and have it all to yourself because that was a time when you knew that most people were working and the children were in school. However, now with many people working from home coupled with the fact that there are more children being home schooled as well as more children attending year round schools, you can t be guaranteed that this will always be the case.
