The continually rising gas prices are a subject of great concern, not to mention the bane of existence for many drivers. In fact, the prices are so high that there are entire websites dedicated to telling drivers where they can find the best gas prices. Fortunately, you don’t have to go that far in order to save a little money on gas.

If you want to save some money on your gas bill, you can simply make a few changes to your driving habits. One of the best things you can do to conserve gas is to simply obey traffic laws. Hard to believe, right? Speed limits were originally put in place largely in order to save gas. When you speed and break the law, you are actually burning off more fuel as well. I can certainly attest to the fact that reducing your speed actually does work because over the course of the last few months, I conducted a little test to see if there was any weight to this notion. What did I do? I slowed down...a lot. Prior to doing the speed limit, I used to be really bad about speeding, sometimes reaching speeds well into fifteen to twenty miles above the speed limit (which is considered reckless) and all for no reason! So, if you want to save some gas money and avoid a costly speeding ticket, stick with the speed limit.

Sudden stops and acceleration can also eat up your gas budget fairly quickly. The same thing can be said about cross country or track races. When the gun goes off and you step off of that starting line, if you surge (which is simply speeding up and slowing down at various intervals), then your body is using up more energy to accelerate and slow down versus maintaining one speed. Now, let s bring it back to the subject of cars. When you are stopped at a light, resist the urge to move out faster than the person next to you and ease into your maximum speed. Pressing your foot on the gas pedal and accelerating quickly will only burn up your fuel, not to mention the fact that it really won’t get you to your destination any faster. The same concept is true when it comes to stopping. Let your foot off of the gas and coast into your stop rather than lying on the gas pedal and stopping suddenly.

Finally, don’t buy into common myths and notions about saving gas. For example, there is no written proof that turning your air conditioner off will help you save gas; it won t help you. Similarly, tests have been done comparing cars with their windows down and with their windows up in order to determine if the increased resistance would have an effect on gas usage – it doesn’t. So, go ahead and turn on the air conditioning and be comfortable while you drive. Just drive safely and obey all of the traffic laws in your area and you will be just fine!
