West Sussex is a county located in the south of England, connected to borders of East Sussex at Brighton and Hove, Hampshire and Surrey. Since the 12th century, the county of Sussex has been split into two parts, East and West. It gained separate county councils in 1888, but still was a single ceremonial county until 1974 and the coming into force under the Local Government Act 1972.
West Sussex is a distinctive county, famous for its stately homes and castles such as Arundel Castle and Bramber Castle. Its county town is Chichester and the highest summit of the county is Black Down, at 280 m or 919 ft.
The M23 motorway and A23 passes in the east of the county from Waterloo in London to all the way to Brighton. There are other major roads such as A272, which runs from east to west and the A27 that does the same but is nearer to the coast and offers a scenic beauty of the sea and the A272 that goes in the center of the county. Most of the coast is touched by the A259, which is usually taken as a different route to the A27.
Gatwick Airport is the second largest in UK, which has handled more than 32 million travelers in 2005. It is located in the northern side of Crawley. The Arun Valley Line, the Brighton Main Line and the West Coastway Line are the three main railway routes that are established in the county.
