If there is one thing that is true about Internet marketing, it s the fact that working within a niche is the best way for you to be successful. I have said this over and over again, and the people who follow this simple guideline are the ones who are able to take their Internet marketing businesses to even greater heights. Make sure that you are focused in your efforts, and you will see results rather quickly. Why is this the case?
You can think of the Internet as being a large department store and they have almost anything imaginable available at any given time on a variety of different websites. When somebody goes into a physical department store, they typically go with something in mind but they may get distracted along the way and pick up several items. Even the small gimmicks that are at the checkout line will tempt people to purchase, just because they see them. This works well for stores like Wal Mart and Target but it does not work well whenever you re talking about the Internet.
Whenever somebody goes onto the Internet in order to look for something specific, they do it in a much different way than they do whenever they are shopping at a department store. Typically, they will start on the search engines and search for keywords that are exactly related to what it is they re looking for. They then start browsing the difference websites that are presented to them, looking for the one that has that specific item. If they happen to land on a website that is offering something else, they simply click the back button and that website loses the sale. The more focused the website, the more likely it is that they are going to capture that person s attention and receive the sale as a result.
I m not necessarily saying that it is a bad thing to offer several different items but what I am saying is that you must focus on one item at a time. Don t try to sell shoes to somebody that is looking for a digital camera or you re not going to sell either. Sell that individual the digital camera and then look for somebody else that is searching for shoes and sell them the shoes.
An exception to this rule would be whenever you are upselling an individual after they make the initial purchase. Often, it is possible to get somebody to purchase one or more additional items that are directly related to what it is that they already bought. As long as they have their credit card in their hands and are in a buying mood, you would be surprised with how readily they will continue their purchase.
It may take some adjustment of your thinking but getting involved in niche marketing on the Internet is really the only way to see true success online. Focus your attention on one product and look for the market that is interested in it. Remember this rule, and you will go far.
