Rhino s HD 8370 gives the marketplace a manual wire closer that automates the insertion and closing process when you are doing wire binding. In the following report we will dive into the strengths and weaknesses of this machine.

Strengths:

1. The HD8370 offers users some pretty nice flexibility in that it can be used for spines that range from one quarter inch to nine sixteenths in diameter. We liked that there is a sizing guide placed at the front part of the binding table that helps you choose the right size of wire for the book you are putting together.

2. Continuing with the flexibility theme, the HD 8370 can be used with a wide variety of twin loop wire lengths. You can adjust this machine to bind documents that are five and a half inches to fourteen inches in length, and all the standard sizes in between. Essentially, it can safely be said that the HD 8370 can be used with any wire size on the market.

3. While there are so many inserters and closers on the market that need to be attached to a certain punch in order to operate, we consider it a big plus that the HD 8370 works as a standalone device. It can, of course, be bolted to the Rhino OD and HD series of machines as well. Again, we are liking the flexibility of this machine more and more, as you can use it by yourself or as part of an assembly line type production environment.

4. The all metal, heavy duty construction of the HD 8370 lives up to the name and reputation of the rest of the Rhino line. It is clearly a machine that is designed to be used every day for years.

Weaknesses:

1. One thing that the HD 8370 can t claim is easy setup. There are several steps involved in getting the machine up and running, including setting the wire closer, moving the edge guide, ensuring proper wire placement, adjusting the wire rest, book stop and the height of the table. This can be enough to challenge even the most experienced users of wire binding machines. If you are using it to bind primarily one size and length of wire, you can do somewhat of a set it and forget it approach. However, if you plan on changing wire sizes regularly, be prepared to take some time getting everything ready to go.

2. Binding all of the most common lengths is not a problem with the HD 8370, but it is not the ideal machine for custom jobs, as you may run into some trouble inserting and closing the wires. As we stated though, it is fine for the common sizes such as 16, 25, 32, 38, 41, 24, and 34 loop documents.

3. The HD 8370 may also have an inordinate amount of difficulty with wires that are either deformed or are out of pitch even slightly. The bars of the machine are designed as such that the wires will need to be lined up perfectly. Unfortunately, even premium wire binding spines can be stretched slightly in the packaging process causing this type of problem to occur.
