From distracting to dehabilitating, headaches can ruin a meal, a day – or a good night’s sleep. Headaches can occur within different parts of the head from the sinus cavity to the brain and with over one hundred fifty different types, there are many places and ways for the pain to occur. Sever headaches should never be ignored as they can indicate something as simple as the onset of a cold to an aneurism.

Tension headaches are one of the most common headaches and are caused by tension that occurs within the neck, shoulders or other tension point. The pain radiates from the head resulting in a headache but pain also aches from the point of tension. The headache is most often a symptom of the pain from the tense area. It can easily be treated with over the counter headache medication such as Advil or Tylenol. Up to seventy five percent of those complaining from consistent headache pain are suffering from tension headaches.

Tension headaches can be treated with the combination of a healthy diet, massage, stretching and exercise. Health professionals recommend maintaining good posture to deter tension headaches as well as ensuring quality sleep during the night.

Women are more susceptible to headaches at certain points during their menstrual cycle or through period due to fluctuating hormones within the body. Pregnancy and menopause are often times when the most women are diagnosed with headaches due to hormonal changes. Headaches can be a side effect of some medications containing hormone therapy such as birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy during menopause.

Sinus headaches can be identified by the constant pain that does not subside. Anything from weather changes to the draining of the nasal passages can cause these intense headaches that are often mistaken for migraines. Eye strain occurs when a sinus headache is present with vomiting, nausea and fever.

Migraines are one of the most intense forms of headaches and can be accompanies with more sever systems such as photosensitivity and vomiting. Migraines occur in one or both sides of the head and can be treated with prescription medication such as Amerge or Immatrex. Migraines are most common in adults and should be treated by a medical professional if occurring on a regular basis.

Headaches caused by low blood sugar occur within thirty percent of the population. These headaches occur as a side effect of the low blood sugar and can be avoided by eating regularly, or having small snacks on hand for these bouts of these headaches associated with low blood sugar.

If a headache occurs after a bout of coughing, or moving or symptoms seem to come in instantly and are sever enough to induce light and sound sensitive or nausea one should seek professional advice. If a headache comes along with double vision, a stiff neck or weakness or numbness in the joints than it could be something serious.

Although Headaches are our body’s way of telling us that something isn’t right – but are often not a sign of something serious. Nearly five percent of adults suffer from chronic headaches due from tension or stress, it is important to speak with a health professional to rule out any underlying disorders and devise a treatment plan.
