It seems like staying focused while you are working is becoming more and more difficult to achieve in today s modern offices and even for those who work from home, and a large part of this has to do with the fact that many people don t have the discipline to create a pattern of healthy work habits. For instance, if you live in an office environment, you have to expect that it will be noisy. There will be phones ringing, multiple conversations taking place between co workers, co workers and clients and clients with other clients. Especially if there is a huge deadline due, it can seem down right chaotic. On another, similar, note, working from home can be equally as challenging. For the person who says, “I ll get to it later,” they may suddenly find themselves working for 48 hours straight to meet a deadline simply because they didn t take the time to get it done earlier.

Staying focused means staying disciplined. But for many of us, this is easier said than done. However, once achieved, staying focused can carry over into success for those who are tough enough to stick it out. So, how do you start? Create a list of priorities. If you work from home and you know that you want to work out each day, figure out a work schedule that will allow you time to de stress, refocus and get some exercise while at the same time, allowing for ample room to finish work, eat and run errands. For those who work from home, you have a great advantage that those who work in offices don t. You can leave your work at any time of the day to meet up with a friend for lunch, run a few errands, food shop and/or take a short nap, knowing that you can come back and finish your work later on at any time. For those who work in offices, often times, leaving to run errands in the middle of the day can be done, but first you may have to clock out or let a supervisor know where you are going (in case you receive any phone calls) as well as when you can be expected back.

There is a lot more reporting to be done when you are working in an office environment with other people and your supervisor can pop in at any time and stand guard over your shoulder or call you in for impromptu meetings. However, when you work from home, you have the freedom to do what you want. The problem with most people who fail at working from home is that they are simply not disciplined enough to put themselves on a reasonable enough schedule to get their work done. Often, procrastination will set in. Suddenly, they may realize that they wanted to go see that new movie or that they haven t seen their favorite soap opera because in the past, they may have worked at a regular office job. Laundry needs to be done, folded and put away, the bathroom needs to be cleaned. These kinds of people procrastinate and find any litany of excuses for not getting their work done. If you live with someone else, it can be even that much more difficult because some people want to spend more time with their loved ones than they do with their computer screen. However, you must remain disciplined and focused in order to get your work done whether it is out of the comfort of your own home or an office environment outside of your home.
