There are a lot of people out there who poo poo social media. These are the same people who think that sites such as Facebook, Myspace and Twitter are nothing more than an excuse to post pictures of yourself, brag to friends and stalk other people s profiles. Well, while some of this may be true, the good news is that the vast majority of it is not. In fact, there are many people (and an even more steadily growing number) who are discovering the value of social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter and are beginning to see how it is helping (or can potentially help) their business.
A while ago, I joined this social networking site called StumbleUpon. I quickly became obsessed. You see, Stumble Upon (SU) is a type of site in which people send each other pages that they have come across on the Internet that they have found interesting. For instance, I may have seen a funny video that I think others would find funny. I will bookmark the site on SU and list it as one of my favorites . Then, when other SU users stumble through my favorite stumbles, they will see the pages that I found interesting. Of these pages, you have the choice as to whether or not you will give it a thumbs up , thumbs down and/or write a review of the page. When you write a review of the page, your profile shows up next to the review so that other SU users can identify you along with your comment.
After only a few months of using SU religiously, I quickly amassed a relatively large following of SU followers. In addition, I had reviewed and thumbed up a few thousand SU sites, which drew even more attention to my profile. Before I knew it, I was receiving all sorts of friend requests from other SU users who wanted to send me sites that they thought I would like. One of my friends, who owns two of his own websites contacted me to let me know that because of a specific page that I had stumbled on his site, he had over 100,000 visitors to that page alone, and what is even more impressive is the fact that some of those people actually ended up purchasing the product that was being advertised on that page!
Stumble Upon, when compared to Face book and Twitter, is similar in the fact that it functions as a way to create a buzz or draw attention to a particular site, product or service by way of putting it in front of other people who you think might actually care about it. For instance, on Face book, you can do this by creating what is called a fan page . The purpose of the fan page is to create a way to drive people to the real website. Also, it doesn t hurt to show that your particular website may have thousands of people who think that your company is just the best. This certainly ups your credibility as a business owner!
