The Fellowes Intellishred SB 99Ci packs a lot of features into a 1 to 3 user small office shredder. Here we have compiled a list of some of the strengths and weaknesses we see in the SB 99Ci.

Strengths:

1. Jams are great things if your grandmother is making them, or if a rock band is kicking them out. In the world of shredders, however, there s nothing messier, more inconvenient, or just plain annoying than a paper jam. The SB 99Ci features Fellowes impressive new Jam Proof System to help make them a thing of the past. With its bright and clear indicators, you will always know if you are using this shredder correctly. If the light is green, you can probably fit a little more paper in the feed, yellow means the shredder is operating comfortably within its capacity, and a red light will let you know that you are trying to put too much paper into the feed, and will stop the machine until you correct the error. If you should happen to feed paper into the machine unevenly or at an angle, the SB 99Ci will power right through that potential paper jam.

2. One of the things that we love to judge shredder on is its safety features, and the SB 99Ci truly excels in this regard as well. It comes equipped with the more common safety measures such as automatic shutoff when the bin door is open or the shred bag is full. However, the SB 99Ci has a more remarkable safety feature as well. Known as Safe Sense (and included on many of Fellowes shredders) it utilizes a system of electronic body heat sensors that are able to detect when hands or fingers (or a pet s nose or ears) are too close to the feed opening and cuts power to the motor immediately. This is a great way to keep kids safe and we consider it one of the most innovative safety features we ve seen in a shredder yet.

3. The SB 99Ci meets our standard of document destruction giving you a cross cut shred pattern that is rated at a security level of 3 (frankly, we re not sure why strip cut shredders haven t been phased out entirely). In 2005 congress enacted the FACTA laws that require businesses that are discarding the types documents that criminals use for ID theft to render those documents unreadable with cross cut, level 3 shredding. More than just a matter of common sense then, you can avoid fines, litigation, and other possible damage to your small business by using a shredder like the SB 99Ci.

4. The SB 99Ci has a few other features that we appreciated, such as: an impressive capacity of 17 sheets of paper per pass, nice quiet operation (great for a smaller shared office space), nice sized 9 gallon bin that slides out and is easy to empty, and a life time guarantee of the steel cutting heads. The 1/3 Hp motor seemed to pack a lot of punch as well.

Weaknesses:

1. The SB 99Ci is meant for intermittent use throughout the typical day, and is not the kind of shredder that can withstand high volume, continuous use. It is rated to run continuously for 20 minutes or so until it well need a rest to prevent the motor from overheating. If you feel that you need a more high volume shredder, Fellowes makes a number of them that are rated for continuous use, such as the C 220Ci, which also has all the jam free and safety features of the SB 99Ci.
