3 Maybe 4 Ways to Make a Wedding Gift Easier to Choose

I suppose we all have preconceived ideas and emotions when it comes to planning a wedding, especially when it’s yours. It’s a whole different world from having a boyfriend even if you’ve been seeing each other for years, even if you’ve been living together. The dynamics change and there are bound to be feelings of anticipation, some anxiety, and of course the desire for everything to be “perfect.”

During all the pre wedding planning and jitters, you may feel a little nervous about letting your friends know what you would like in the way of gifts. It’s easier for and with family. They are more inclined to come right out and ask you, or know you well enough to get you something you’ll like and enjoying using and/or just having around. Most people like to give gifts: they have fun trying to figure out what would be “right.” Then there are some who get frustrated trying to decide what to get and this is where you can be helpful. You can do the traditional thing and register at a department store or specialty store that carries the china, the silverware, the place settings, linens and so on that you like and will use. That way you kind of narrow the “guessing” of gifts down some, and your guests won’t have to be concerned about whether or not you are going to like their gifts.

Now, while choosing which stores to register with you also have to consider what you want and the price ranges of items. Some people can afford to spend more than others, but in either case you don’t want to out price yourself. For your friends and family who can afford to spend more, they can use your store registry as a reference and go elsewhere, perhaps somewhere more costly, and get you a comparable but more personalized gift. Mind you, before you do this, you should sit with you fiancée and discuss what you might need and what you would like in the way of gifts. It makes your choosing the stores easier too. It’s also a good idea to choose stores that are conveniently located.

Your list should vary: it can be more specific as far as linens, cutlery, china etc; and it can be more generalized when it comes to hobby type, sports type, fun stuff. You can get a registry at a novelty type store so if a friend checks it out they will get a “surprise me” response. If they know you well enough, you should be delighted with their choice. Also, with the ease and wider range of gifts selections on line, it would be very smart to choose stores that accommodate on line registries.

Another helpful remedy to wedding gift blues is having sisters, brothers, and best friends pass the words along as to what you would like – obviously through casual conversations you’ve had with them while you were discussing and going a bit crazy planning your wedding. These “wedding gift messengers” of yours can be a big help if a guest wants to have a gift monogrammed or otherwise personalized.

Doing this for your guests helps them and actually helps you as well. They feel good about the gift they give you, and you know you will enjoy and get good use out of their respective gifts. And, with the “surprise me” gifts you will probably get some great laughs, big smiles, and appreciate the non conformist limb they went out on to surprise you.

Gifts are just that … gifts. They are given with thoughtfulness, with love, and for the sheer pleasure of giving. Enjoy your friends: enjoy your gifts: enjoy the beginning of the rest of your life.
