Strengths:
* The 1255 can laminate documents that are up to 11.75 inches wide, so it s a great machine to use if your document is a little bit larger than the standard 8.5 x 11 size.
* This is a fully manual machine that is easy to use. All you need to do is place your paper into the machine s feed opening and begin cranking the handle. Within seconds, your document will be beautifully laminated.
* Since this machine is manual, you do not need electricity to operate it. That means there s no heat involved and, thus, no warm up time is necessary. Plus, with the 1255, you can easily laminate documents that would be damaged if they processed through heat lamination.
* This machine can not only laminate, it can apply adhesive to one or both sides of your document. (This would be good for things such as storyboards.) To do this, you just need to change the cartridge, which is very easy to accomplish. There are several different adhesive types available: hi tack, standard, and repositionable. (Note: if you want the strongest bond possible, use the hi tack adhesive as it instantly creates a permanent bond.) All of these adhesives are acid free so you won t have to worry about it causing discoloration or problems with your important documents. Using an adhesive cartridge it is extremely easy to make signs and posters that can be posted in your office, on doors or on posters.
* The components of this machine are very high quality which leads to flawless lamination and adhesive application. The high pressure rollers ensure that the laminate will be applied without wrinkles or bubbles and that the adhesive application will be totally even.
* There is a built in trimmer so you can immediately trim excess laminate after your document has exited the machine.
Weaknesses:
* The handle is on the right side of the unit so while right handed people will be comfortable with this design, lefties may experience some problems, unfortunately.
* You can only laminate items that are 3.2 millimeters thick or less. And this is not a good machine to use for large format documents, obviously, since the machine is too small to handle them.
* The cartridges used by this machine are proprietary and cost slightly more than supplies for other types of laminators. For most small and medium volume users the convenience of this machine and its versatility will offset the increased cost. However, high volume applications may warrant a look at a hot laminator with less expensive supplies.
Overall, the 1255 has many more strengths than weaknesses. It s really great that you can not only laminate with this machine, but you can also apply adhesive to your project. Since this unit has some many functions and features, the Xyron 1255 Professional Laminator is highly recommended.
