Basically, there are 2 types of membership sites.

There are free sites and there are paid sites. The two kinds of membership websites have one thing in common. Their memberships are composed of individuals who have the same needs or share a similar interests.

Even without paying for a membership, one can still have a domain, put up a website and still be able to choose who to admit and not. This is done when the earnings are projected to come from sales to members after they enroll in the site (sometimes known as up sells).

All the big search engines provide free network websites to anyone for whatever purpose they may want to use it. Two examples of free membership sites are Group sites on MSN and groups on Yahoo. There is no charge at all for anyone to join and it costs nothing to put up these sites. There are no paid administrators or moderators required for these types of sites. Google have their own Google Groups.

Each site sets its own rules on how to join and the code of conduct for the site. It also has varied topics and subjects. There are countless “supportEsites for people with health problems or concerns and for persons who have suffered the loss of loved ones. Websites for those who are into hobbies and crafts like woodworking and quilting are also very numerous.

For those who like traveling, there are also many sites enabling information to be shared. Whatever age group you belong there is a site that suits your taste. There is software provided for chatting and space for posting pictures, document and links for every member of the site. If there s one thing these free websites don t have, it is access to lists and specialized information like music lessons.

Paid for membership sites are set up by companies or people with the aim of making money by supplying difficult to find information, access to specialized data or lists, or instruction in various fields.

Membership sites are owned and operated by individuals who either own the websites or who are hired by the site owners to monitor and oversee them. Unlike in the free membership sites, the topics are more diverse and more specialized in sites with paid membership.

For paid membership site owners they are able to serve a special interest group and get paid presenting information on a topic that is either a passion or particularly important to them. In return the members get a resource that provides a specialized focus in their subject area that saves them time and gathers together all the information they are looking for in one place. If the site offers a means for its members to interact with each other then this is even more valuable.

In some areas of publishing the paid membership model is seen as the only way that some “printEjournals will survive now that so much information is being made freely available over the internet. Financial data is now commonly available as part of a paid membership model as the value of the information justifies the cost in the minds of the reader.
