Youth basketball fundamentals are the cornerstone of basketball skills as youth develop into better players. There are three major key issues that you need to understand in regards to building basketball skill. These three things range from mental, to physical, and revolve around discipline. If a player does not adhere to these three key steps we will explore, they will not move forward in their quest to get better at the craft of basketball.

The first key point is to have a championship mentality. If you do not see yourself as a champion you’ll never make it to the top levels. You have to step forward with confidence, but make sure you’re careful. Over confidence can kill your ambition fast, so it is important to keep your head in check before you lose your cool. While natural skill is always important, a levelheaded player will go further than an athlete that has pure natural talent. Youth basketball fundamentals start here, but move forward quickly.

Hard work always trumps raw talent. That is a major conflict of interest in many novice basketball players. A player with a big heart and focus on hard work will always move forward while talented players without hard work will lose out positions every time. That means a player must work on several key fundamentals from stamina training, shooting, to defense. All these pieces must be in place before a player moves onto the next level. If a player gets lazy at any step of the road, or lacks discipline to follow through a routine daily no matter what the conditions are, they will not be able to match their opponent nor surpass them with ease. Remember in regards to a championship mentality, hard work is a major key to success.

The last piece to this mental puzzle is to sacrifice personal glories for the sake of the team. A player who’s a hot shot and doesn’t pass around the ball, or forgets that he has four other players on the court with him to help block, shoot, pass, and rebound, will always fail. The old adage is true, “there is no I in team”. If a person focuses on being a team player, and recognizes when it is right to pass or take a shot, the team will rise to the upper levels no matter where they are. Teamwork is not just something that will make offensive strides, defense must be a team effort as well. No one key is more important than the other here, and without the proper work ethic and practice, the championship mentality falls through the cracks and leaves teams without victory.

A champion is not at the top of the mountain on day one. Focusing on the mental aspect of basketball can lead to overconfidence, but if properly molded, can be the first of three major key points to becoming a better basketball player whether your or old. Champions aren’t born, they are made through hard work and discipline. These two things walk hand in hand with the championship mentality, and it’s important to keep that in mind.
