Although there are a few folks who don t mind a skunk or two on their property, most of us would do whatever we can to get rid of skunks. Yes, skunks that make themselves at home in your yard or in your shed will eat mice and other small animals. But, they are also a smelly nuisance and can be very messy to have around.

If you want to be sure that skunks find somewhere else to live when they are out looking for a new place to call home, there are some things you can do. If you take some easy, preventative steps, chances are they will find another place to live.

One thing is for sure. Skunks love living under houses and back patios. But it seems as though the most popular spot to find a skunk is under your front porch. If you have ever felt as though there was a skunk living under there, you were probably right.

One of the first things you should do to get rid of skunks is to seal all points of entry to the areas under your home. Skunks can fit into small openings, so be very sure to get them all. If you want to be sure the skunks are out from under your home before you seal them in, you can call your local exterminator. He or she should be able to check and get remove any skunks for you.

Remove all wood and rock piles from the property around your home. Also, if you have fallen trees nearby, get rid of them. These are spots that seem very inviting to skunks. All they need is a very small space to hide.

Mow all weeds and tall grass. Skunks can move about comfortably if you have a lot of tall grass to hide them. You want to be sure to remove their comfort level. If they can t move about undetected, they will find a place in which they can travel in relative safety.

If you have a trash bin that sits outside (as most of us do), make sure it will not open if it is knocked over. Also, be sure everyone in your home is aware of the importance of making sure everything makes it into the bin. Trash scattered about will attract skunks. Especially if they find food or food wrappers from time to time.

Feed your pets indoors or in your garage. If you are feeding your pets outside and a stray bit of food is found by a skunk, they will be back to look for more. They are very opportunistic animals, and will remember exactly where the free meals are.

Lastly, take a walk around your home. Look for places that a skunk may hide such as holes or openings under your home or sheds.

Following these tips should help you get rid of skunks from your property. Eventually, they will find a neighbor s home more appealing.
