Your trade show staff is a crucial part of your trade show booth, and whether or not your trade show staff is properly trained can determine whether or not your trade show booth is a success. Learn and use these ten simple tips for trade show staff training, and make sure you have the best trade show staff at the show. Whether your trade show staff consists of twenty people, or simply you, you need to make sure your staff is properly trained if you want to be a trade show success!

TIP 1) BE HEALTHY. STAY HEALTHY. Make sure you are in excellent health for the trade show, and then make sure you stay in excellent health. Get a full night of sleep before each day of the trade show. Eat a complete breakfast. Drink plenty of water. Stay hydrated. Wear comfortable shoes.

TIP 2) STAND UP! Let your visitors use the chairs in your trade show booth. The chairs (if you have them) aren't for you. You need to be standing up. Trade show booth staffers who are standing are much more approachable than staffers who are sitting down. If you are staffing a trade show booth, you belong on your feet.

TIP 3) WHO ARE YOU? Whatever else you decide to wear, make sure you wear a name tag. And make sure your tag has your name and your company name on it in big, easy-to-read letters. Make sure your name tag is easy to see, and not partially hidden behind your tie, tucked into your pocket, or flipped over or around and unreadable.

TIP 4) SHOW YOUR SMILE. Welcome every visitor with a smile and a handshake, and immediately find out their name. Address them by their name when you talk. People like to be called by their name. So get their name and use it. When your conversation is over, thank them for stopping by your trade show booth, and again, use their name.

TIP 5) ASK QUESTIONS... It may seem obvious, but before you can start giving answers, you must know what your prospect's problem is! Don't begin a conversation by telling a customer what you can do for them (unless you're telepathic and can read their mind). Wait until they tell you what they need. Ask questions, and then listen to the answers. Your goal is to find out what your customer needs. After you understand what your prospect needs then you can tell them how you can help them. Of course, by asking questions, you may also find out that they don't really need what you are offering. If that is the case, then you need to thank them and move on.

TIP 6) BUT NOT YES or NO QUESTIONS. Ask open ended questions, not yes or no questions. When you ask a visitor a yes or no question, you almost always just get a yes or no answer which ends the conversation. Instead of asking, "Can I help you", rephrase the question to "What are you looking for at the show today?" The first question can be answered "NO", but the second question requires an answer. If you still get a "nothing" or "I don't know" answer to the second question, you need to follow it up with another open ended question.

TIP 7) OPEN YOUR EARS, NOT YOUR MOUTH. Follow the 90-10 rule. Ninety percent of your conversation should be listening. Ten percent of your conversation should be talking. You learn more about your prospect when you are listening and not talking.

TIP 8) STOP PAYING ATTENTION... Stop paying attention... to your competition and the other trade show booths. But do be sure to pay attention to your visitors. Your visitors should get ALL of your attention. Visitors and prospects are your reason for being at the booth - not your cell phone or the guy in the booth next to you.

TIP 9) GIVEAWAYS WORK. Invest in trade show booth giveaways, and hand them out to potential clients. Trade show giveaways and handouts are a great way to reward people for visiting by your trade show booth. There are many trade show booth giveaway ideas to choose from - from inexpensive items like pens and magnets to more expensive items like ipods and vacations.

TIP 10) FOCUS. Focus on your own trade show booth, and not other trade show booths at the show. Your job is to convert visitors to prospects, and prospects to customers, and then help your customers in whatever it is they need. Focus. Focus. Focus.

If you want to be a trade show master, learn and use these ten simple trade show staff training tips. And of course, don't forget to make sure your trade show staff is knows everything there is to know about your company and its products and services, and can answer any and all questions. Be helpful, happy, and professional, and have a successful trade show!
